Dear Mr. Yap,

I love my rice GMO-free.

I am therefore protesting any move that would allow the importation, distribution, and cultivation of genetically-modified rice in my country.

The Philippines is a centre of origin and biodiversity of rice and rice is the Filipino’s most important food.

If the Bureau of Plant Industry, an attached office of your agency, approves GMO rice its impact on our most important food crop would be disastrous.

GMO rice is risky. It poses a great threat to the Philippines, a rice-eating country. It will threaten our rice biodiversity and compromise the environment and human health. Moreover, Bayer’s GMO rice has already caused massive financial damage to the global rice industry.

The approval of Bayer LL62 will open the floodgates to further GMO rice contamination in the Philippines. GMO rice is currently facing global consumer rejection. Once LL62 is approved in the country, the Philippines, a net importer of its most important food staple, could become the dumping ground of GMO rice rejected by the rest of the world. Further, the entry of GMO rice will make widespread GMO contamination within the country probable. GMO rice could outcross wild and native varieties, which could eventually lead to their extinction.

It is clearly not in the interest of our country to approve GMO rice. We therefore ask your office to reject the current application of Bayer
LL62, as well as all future applications for genetically-engineered varieties of our staple food.
