Close down Nanticoke and stop polluting the atmosphere

Nanticoke is the largest coal fired power plant in North America and Canada’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions that are the cause of global warming. The power plant is also Ontario’s biggest source of smog. It is estimated that smog is responsible for the death of nearly 6,000 people in the province every year.

Yet, despite his election promise to shut this dirty power plant by 2007, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty has determined that Nanticoke will continue spewing its toxic pollutants into the atmosphere until 2014. This is unacceptable. Greenpeace wants it closed at the latest by 2012. This can be done by switching to a safe, clean and cheap electricity system based on aggressive conservation, renewable energy and local generation.

Take action now.

Send a message to the Minister of Energy, Hon Dwight Duncan telling him to close the Nanticoke coal power plant by 2012 and invest more in green renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and geothermal energies, which do not hurt the environment.
