Stop the Tar Sands Mr. Harper!

Dear Mr. Harper,

The Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change is the only global mechanism we have to deal with climate change, and it is in danger of collapsing if Canada fails to meet the emissions reduction targets it has agreed to. The goal was to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 6% below 1990 levels by 2010, and in order to meet this goal, emissions must go down by 280 million tonnes per year.

Unfortunately, Canada is failing to meet its Kyoto commitments, in large part due to the development of the tar sands in Alberta.  Tar sands production causes 40 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent to be emitted every year – singlehandedly ensuring that Canada cannot meet its Kyoto targets.  Furthermore, tar sands development – and emissions – are increasing, and the Canadian government provides tax support to tar sands companies through Accelerated Capital Cost Allowances.

If the tar sands continue to operate as they are doing, there is no hope of accomplishing even the limited targets set out by the Kyoto agreements.  Please end all access to the Accelerated Capital Cost Allowance tax break to any tar sands projects immediately, and ensure that emissions reductions targets are enforced in the industry.
